Is This Classic MTG Combo Still Worth Running?

Is This Classic MTG Combo Still Worth Running?

Demonic Counsel is a powerful throwback to Demonic Tutor, one of the best search effects of all time. While it comes with a delirium restriction, once active, it can fetch any card you need. Before that, it’s limited to grabbing a Demon, which might seem restrictive—until you pair it with the right deck.

Enter Metamorphic Alteration + Archfiend of the Dross—a sneaky two-card combo that has already seen competitive success in Pioneer.

🔹 Step 1: Use Demonic Counsel to fetch Archfiend of the Dross early.
🔹 Step 2: Later, cast Metamorphic Alteration on your opponent’s creature, turning it into an Archfiend of the Dross copy.
🔹 Step 3: If their creature didn’t enter with oil counters, you pass the turn… and they lose the game on their upkeep!

This game-ending trick might just make a comeback in Pioneer. Are you still running this combo, or will you give it a shot? Let us know in the comments!
